Some of these re-releases involved collaborations with contemporary artists, such as Jean-Michel Othoniel. Since the 1990s Jean-Michel Othoniel has focused his artistic practice on blown glass, and the repetition of bricks or brightly coloured beads. Jean-Michel Othoniel’s sculptures range from small-scale to monumental.

Born in 1917, Catherine Dior’s fate was tragically linked to the Second World War. She lived with her father in the south of France, near Cannes, where she joined a resistance network in 1941 and was responsible for transmitting reports to London. However she was arrested in July 1944 and deported to the Ravensbrück concentration camp. She was released at the end of the war.

Soirée brillante was made of champagne silk satin, veiled in gray-blue silk tulle, which was quite different from the original model in pink satin and blue tulle. The entire outfit was embroidered by the House of Rébé, whose embroidery design depicted the motif of a cage.

The preciosity of this dress is characteristic of evening dresses and ball gowns designed by Christian Dior, for whom “a ball gown makes you a radiant woman, full of charm, refinement and femininity.” These ‘dresses of light,’ true works of art, embody the dreams and excesses of the post-war world.

A visionary, Christian Dior very early on saw the value of establishing the House abroad and created designs adapted to the local clientele. This is how many international labels were launched.

Designs were made of fabrics tailored to the countries for which they were intended. It became very expensive to buy the rights to reproduce and distribute Dior designs, and the name Christian Dior became famous throughout the world. The House of Dior was the first to adapt its organization to the modern, post-war world, in which the international dimension was pivotal.

For his last Haute Couture show, Gianfranco Ferré presented a collection entitled Passion indienne. It was inspired by the colors and treasures of India and paid tribute to the many trips the couturier had made there during the 1970s. For him, it was an odyssey of colors which demonstrated his love for an imaginary East where all excesses were permitted.
