As silence settled in the salons of 30 Avenue Montaigne, the “announcer” called out the name chosen by Christian Dior for each look just before the model took her first step.
The show followed a schedule which was very carefully defined during the entire preparation process, as “a just balance must be kept between day dresses, elaborate toilettes and evening dresses”, in Christian Dior’s own words. But it still had to be an event: “A couturier who aims to present a two-hour dramatic spectacle without benefit of either plot or interval, is faced with trials undreamt of by the ordinary theatrical producer,” he continued in his memoir.
The success of a line stemmed from the attention to the finest details; as it was revealed to the public, each new collection embodied the changes of its era, expressing as much an art de vivre as the designer’s own vision.
